Saxtet Publications (SXP) was established in 1990, and is a publishing company specialising in quality new sheet music for the saxophone. It was founded in Birmingham, England and is run by saxophonists for saxophonists.
Origins and Growth Saxtet Publications evolved from Saxtet, a saxophone quartet established in 1985 at the Birmingham Conservatoire. Initially, all SXP's works were written for performance by Saxtet members but it now also publishes arrangements and original compositions by many other composers from all around the world. The catalogue currently contains over 100 works, several of which appear on the saxophone syllabuses of the UK's music examining boards.
Saxophonists respond enthusiastically to SXP titles and the wealth of supporting information (audio samples, programme notes and composer biographies) that appear on the website. With its news and event pages, the site has gradually become a hub of saxophonic communication, and recruiting for the National Saxophone Choir of Great Britain was launched through its pages.
SXP also takes active steps to promote excellence; projects include its pioneering Sax Scorchers studies album (a co-operative project involving SXP composers and on-line 'Sibelius' musicians, which now has six titles on music exam syllabuses), its 2004 sax quartet performance and composition competitions and its support of the National Sax Choir's 2005 composition competition.
Objectives - To create and expand the saxophone repertoire so that it reflects the instrument's unparalleled versatility. - To make available enjoyable and challenging music for all saxophonic genres – solo, accompanied, duet, quartet, ensemble and orchestral. - To publish saxophone music on the basis of its musical quality as well as commercial viability. - To promote music that encourages technical and musical development and is also suitable for public performance at all levels. - To be guided by saxophonists' requirements and opinions in the search for new music. - To continue to provide opportunities for talented composers with a specialist knowledge of the saxophone, and to encourage other composers to write for the instrument. - To promote accessibility by allowing customers to view and playback scores online before ordering music.
